She later enrolled in the songwriting program at Berklee College of Music in Boston but left during her junior year to focus on her music career.

In April 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, McAlpine started the Instagram #BerkleeAtHome streaming concert series. Unfortunately, her father passed away in mid-March 2020, and she wrote the song "Headstones and Land Mines" about him on her debut album, Give Me A Minute. She also dedicated the song "chemtrails" to him on her second album, Five Seconds Flat.
