The Sex Pistols burst onto the music scene in London in 1975 and quickly became one of the most culturally influential acts in popular music. Despite their initial career lasting just two and a half years, they left an indelible mark on punk rock and inspired many later punk and alternative rock musicians. Their rebellious attitude, clothing, and hairstyles were a significant influence on the punk image.

The band was initially composed of vocalist Johnny Rotten (John Lydon), guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook, and bassist Glen Matlock. However, Matlock was later replaced by Sid Vicious in early 1977. Under the management of Malcolm McLaren, the Sex Pistols attracted widespread media controversies that brought them to the attention of the mainstream British press. One infamous incident occurred when they swore live on-air during a December 1976 television interview. In May 1977, they released their single "God Save the Queen," which described the monarchy as a "fascist regime," instantly popularizing punk rock in the UK. The song was banned by the BBC and nearly every independent radio station in Britain, making it one of the most censored records in British history.

The Sex Pistols' only album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols (1977), became a UK number one and a staple record of punk rock. However, the band's tumultuous tour of the US in January 1978 led to their eventual breakup, which was announced by Rotten live on stage. Over the next few months, the three remaining members recorded songs for McLaren's film of the Sex Pistols' story, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. Sadly, Vicious died of a heroin overdose in February 1979, following his arrest for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen.
