Album Overview
"The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) is the twelfth studio album by American rapper Eminem. It was released on July 12, 2024, through Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records. This album is Eminem's first studio album in more than four years since "Music to Be Murdered By." The gap of 234 weeks between albums is the second-longest in his career. The only longer gap was 235 weeks between "Encore" and "Relapse." On July 11, 2024, Eminem posted on Twitter, describing the album as "conceptual" and advising fans to listen to the songs in order.
Eminem's alter ego, Slim Shady, is a big part of his most famous songs, like "My Name Is" from 1999 and "The Real Slim Shady" from 2000. The Slim Shady character is how many people remember young Eminem, with his bleached blonde hair, white t-shirt, and jeans. Slim Shady was known for being bold and controversial.
On March 19, 2024, Dr. Dre, a long-time producer and collaborator, revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that Eminem was working on a new album set to release in 2024. On April 26, 2024, Eminem announced his new album during the 2024 NFL draft event in Detroit. He shared a video styled like the show "Unsolved Mysteries," asking, "Who killed Slim Shady?" The video featured a reporter listing Slim Shady's enemies, with comments from rapper 50 Cent. It also showed clips from Eminem's old songs like "My Name Is," "Without Me," and "The Real Slim Shady." At the end of the video, the album's release date and the option to pre-save it were announced.
As part of the promotion, a fake obituary for Slim Shady was published in the Detroit Free Press on May 13, 2024. The obituary described Slim Shady's life and hinted at a dramatic and sudden end. On May 21, 2024, Eminem posted a cryptic video on social media with a message to "All Contacts" saying, "...and for my last trick!" He also changed his profile pictures to a rabbit-in-a-top-hat emoji, which led fans to speculate about his possible retirement.
On July 9, 2024, Eminem revealed the album cover on social media. Earlier, on May 28, 2024, he posted a video with magician David Blaine. In the video, Eminem asked Blaine for a magic trick, and Blaine responded by eating a glass of wine. The video also previewed a song called "Houdini," which was released on May 31, 2024, as the album's lead single. The song was a huge success, topping charts in twelve countries and on the Global 200.
Eminem teased the second single, "Tobey," on June 28, 2024. The song features Big Sean and BabyTron. The teaser clip showed Eminem in a Jason mask with a chainsaw, alongside the featured artists. The song was released on July 2, and its music video, directed by Lyrical Lemonade, came out on July 8 after a short delay.
