ABBA, a Swedish supergroup formed in Stockholm in 1972, comprises four members - Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The group's name is an acronym of the first letters of their first names arranged as a palindrome. They are widely recognized as one of the most successful musical acts in the history of popular music, having topped charts worldwide from 1974 to 1982 and again in 2022.
ABBA gained worldwide recognition in 1974 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest with their song "Waterloo," which was later chosen as the best song in the competition's history during the 50th anniversary celebration of the contest in 2005. During their active years, ABBA consisted of two married couples - Fältskog and Ulvaeus, and Lyngstad and Andersson. The group's popularity skyrocketed, but their personal lives took a hit, eventually leading to the collapse of both marriages. This was reflected in their later music, which featured darker and more introspective lyrics.
After ABBA disbanded in December 1982, Andersson and Ulvaeus continued to achieve success by writing music for various audiences, including stage productions, musicals, and movies. Fältskog and Lyngstad, on the other hand, pursued solo careers.
A decade after the group's break-up, a compilation album, ABBA Gold, was released and became a worldwide best-seller. In 1999, ABBA's music was adapted into a stage musical called Mamma Mia!, which toured globally and remains among the top-ten longest running productions on both Broadway and the West End as of April 2022. The film adaptation of the musical, released in 2008, became the highest-grossing film in the UK that year, with a sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, released in 2018.
In 2016, the group reunited to work on a digital avatar concert tour, with newly recorded songs announced in 2018. Their first new album in 40 years, Voyage, was released on 5 November 2021, receiving positive critical reviews and strong sales in numerous countries. ABBA Voyage, a concert residency featuring ABBA as virtual avatars, opened in May 2022 in London.
ABBA's music is estimated to have sold between 150 million and 385 million records worldwide, and they were ranked as the third-best selling singles artist in the UK with a total of 11.3 million singles sold by 3 November 2012. ABBA is the first group from a non-English-speaking country to have achieved consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the Republic of Ireland. They are the best-selling Swedish band of all time and the best-selling band originating in continental Europe. ABBA had eight consecutive number-one albums in the UK and enjoyed significant success in Latin America, recording a collection of their hit songs in Spanish. In 2002, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and in 2010, they were the first recording artists from a non-Anglophonic country to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2015, their song "Dancing Queen" was inducted into the Recording Academy's Grammy Hall of Fame.
