Thrice is a rock band from Irvine, California, formed in 1998 by high school friends Dustin Kensrue (guitar/vocals) and Teppei Teranishi (lead guitar). The band initially gained fame for their energetic melodic hardcore sound, characterized by heavy guitar distortion, intricate lead parts, and complex rhythms. This style was showcased in their early albums, The Illusion of Safety (2002) and The Artist in the Ambulance (2003).
In 2005, Thrice shifted their musical approach with Vheissu, adding electronic beats and experimental elements, marking a significant evolution in their sound. Their most ambitious project, The Alchemy Index (2007-2008), spanned four EPs, each inspired by the natural elements—fire, water, air, and earth—featuring diverse musical styles and deep lyrics. Later albums like Beggars (2009) and Major/Minor (2011) blended their experimental and traditional rock influences.
After announcing a hiatus in 2011, the band reunited in 2015, inspired by attending a Brand New concert. They released To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere (2016), which received praise for its modern, thoughtful sound. Their tenth album, Palms (2018), continued this trajectory, followed by Horizons/East in 2021, which was lauded for its introspective themes and refined musicianship.
Throughout their career, Thrice has been recognized for their artistic growth and meaningful lyrics. Their music often explores philosophical and personal themes, resonating deeply with fans. A portion of their album sales has consistently been donated to charities, reflecting their commitment to social causes. Critics have praised their versatility and willingness to innovate, cementing their status as one of rock's most dynamic bands.
