Album Overview
"4 Only" is the fourth studio album by South Korean singer and songwriter Lee Hi, released on September 9, 2021, under AOMG. This album marks her return to the music scene after her 2016 album "Seoulite" and her 2019 EP "24°C." It’s also her first major work since parting ways with YG Entertainment. The album's lead single, "Red Lipstick," features Yoon Mi-rae and was released alongside the album on September 9. The album made its debut on the Gaon Album Chart at number 18 in October 2021, selling over 8,000 copies in its first week of release.
Before the album dropped, Lee Hi had already released a pre-release single, "Only," on August 27, 2021. The album was also supposed to have another pre-release single, "Savior," featuring B.I, but it was delayed due to production issues and eventually came out with the album.
"4 Only" is a concept album that explores various types of love, with each track representing different emotions. The album's lyrics capture a wide range of feelings, from the innocence of love to sorrow, joy, sadness, thrill, anger, regret, excitement, and desperation. To express these emotions, Lee Hi experimented with different music genres, moving away from her usual funky R&B style. Instead, she embraced synth-pop and jazz melodies, giving the album a fresh and diverse sound. The Latin-inspired track "Intentions" highlights her husky voice, while "Waterride" features a fast-tempo rhythmic guitar. "Savior," which is her third collaboration with B.I, combines jazz sounds with poetic lyrics. Meanwhile, "Red Lipstick" takes on a retro style, drawing inspiration from the South Korean R&B and hip-hop duo Tashannie.
With "4 Only," Lee Hi continues to showcase her growth as an artist, both in her music style and emotional depth. The album reflects her personal and artistic journey, offering listeners a unique experience that resonates with the various facets of love.
